What is PolyJet?

Print E-mail
Tip: PolyJet printing is comparable to SLA (stereolithography).
FastProtos.com uses Objet's PolyJet™ 3D printing technology, which creates highly detailed parts suitable for form, fit and function.

PolyJet printing is a rapid prototyping process that uses additive manufacturing. The printers have two or more jetting heads (one set for the model and one set for the support material) that spray outlines of the part, layer by layer.

The liquids used are photopolymers, which get cured nearly instantly by a UV lamp within the printer, creating a solid, plastic-like model that is precise and accurate.
The support material is a gel-like substance, which is easily washed away.
The model has a smooth finish and is ready for sanding, painting, drilling, or tapping.

Material Properties are below the video.

Below is a YouTube video of an Objet PolyJet printer in action:

Our Printing Capabilities:
  • Max Model Size: 294 x 192 x 148 mm (11.5 x 7.5 x 5.8 inches)
  • Colors: White (possibly other colors in the future)
  • Min Wall Thickness: 0.6 mm (0.024 inches)
  • Resolution: 600 x 600 x 900 dpi
  • Layers: 28 microns (0.0011 inches)
  • Accuracy: 0.1-0.2 mm for the overall model

PolyJet versus other 3D processes:
  • FDM - Fused Deposition Modeling:
Strengths: True ABS plastic; strong; handles high temps well; low cost
Drawbacks: Not as precise; stair-stepping "ridges"
  • PolyJet:
Strengths: High precision and accuracy; smooth finish; low to high cost
Drawbacks: Not true plastic; doesn't handle high heat well
  • SLA - Stereolithography
Strengths: Very popular; precise; water resistant; low to high cost
    Drawbacks: Not true plastic
  • SLS - Selective Laser Sintering
Strengths: Durable; handles chemicals and higher temps; medium cost
    Drawbacks: Rougher finish
